Little Rachel has had some problems of the diaper variety recently. She has had diarrhea for over a week. Yesterday we saw the pediatrician, did a weight check and a quick exam to make sure she wasn't dehydrated, and had a long chat. So far we don't have any good ideas about what's causing it to last so long. The doctor recommended adding some lactobacillus culture powder to her food (to recolonize the normal bacteria that always live in the intestine), and we're crossing our fingers that it works so we don't have to take the next step of collecting samples to send for lab work.
Her main problem right now is actually her diaper rash. She recommended Triple Cream for her bottom, but then said the main thing that would help was to exposure to fresh air. Geez, how ya gonna air out a 7 month old with diarrhea who crawls?? The doctor recommended putting down some old towels in her crib and then laying her down for her nap sans diaper. At first I thought, "No Way," but then the guilt got to me and I decided I should try all my options. This afternoon I tucked 3 old towels over and around the crib mattress, and Rachel got to sleep in the nude.
It turned out pretty much like I thought it would.

Oh, that is so sad and yucky...sorry mom...have you heard of acid mantle...when Tommy had a longterm diaper rash, the doctor recommended this and it totally worked (it's expensive, but it's at most drugstores).
So I'm so sorry!! And YUCK!! Jax had horrible diaper rash due to an antibiotic he was on. I bought acidophilus (bad spelling) powder at Good Earth and it worked really well. They had a baby kind.
I hope you can get it figured out, so you don't have to take samples.
Oh man is this really what I have to look forward to as McKinley gets older...I hope we don't have that problem we've got enough already!
Oh.....that doctor!!!!
Okay I really need that laugh. We experienced this with one of our babies. The thing that finally worked for me was to use Aquafor and then a thick layer of vaseline over it. The Aquafor really heals rash/sores fast (even open sores). Putting the vaseline over the top helped keep it there long enough to do it's job. Sometimes I used Desitin under the vaseline too, but mostly the Aquafor.
Good luck!
Is this some sort of sick (REALLY sick) joke? I can just picture your doctor having dinner with family the night that advice was given: "...and then I told her she should put her diarrhea-baby down for a nap with NO DIAPER on -- and I think she bought it! This lady is totally going to do it, betcha ten bucks! Ohhh, good times...hey, can you pass the butter?" Geez.
I am taking small consolation in the fact that I'm not the only one up to my elbows in other people's excrement. My heck, kids are gross.
Ewwww...so sorry!
